Coach Edward joined BayAreaChess's Coaching Staff in October 2022!

Hello! 

My name is Edward Lewis and I enjoy learning and exploring many different discipline’s and categories. Chess and composing music are two of my favorite pastimes. I have been playing chess in the Bay Area since 1993 and have accumulated 30 years of fond memories, insight and experience. Education, M.A. Psych Pepperdine University, B.A. Psych CSU Stanislaus.

Chris Atkeson

Coach Chris joined BAC in September 2022!

Coach Chris began playing chess in 2014 as a freshman at UC Berkeley, and it quickly became his favorite pastime.  He began playing over the board chess in 2019 at the Kolty Chess Club and has since reached the rank of chess expert.  Chris works as a software engineer, and when he is not working or playing chess he likes to mountain bike, play piano, and go mountaineering.

Hola Chess People!

I have been coaching/training chess students for twenty years, created and published the Daily Chess Calendar, and founded Let’s Play Chess (CA) and the Let’s Play Chess Club (LPCC). I teach in the south bay and enjoy gaming, good food & JRPGs. Blunder Check!

Neil Roda

BAC is happy to welcome Coach Neil to the '22 Coaching Team!

After graduating Santa Rosa Junior College AS, and San Jose State University BSEE, Neil has been working in the Semiconductor industry since 2015. Aside from chess, Neil enjoys riding his motorcycle around the Bay Area, exploring new places and meeting new people. By the end of 2021, he has renewed his interest in chess and has become more active online. His favorite chess time control is Blitz and favorite chess variant is Crazyhouse. 

 

Jordan Langland

Jordan Langland is a well-known Coach and Tournament Director in Bay Area.

Jordan is now national level tournament director and has directed approximately 1500 tournaments. Yes, 1500. He has been working with the BAC for many years, while coaching and directing.

As a Coach for afterschool programming, Jordan specializes in teaching Beginner and Intermediate players.

Phillip Ebbers

Coach Phillip is a recent graduate of anthropological studies at the University of Oregon, a professional mixologist, an herb garden enthusiast, a prospective law student, and an avid tabletop and board game player.  A Bay Area native, he currently resides in Salem, Oregon, and teaches virtually via Zoom.  Games, he believes, are not only a mental exercise, but a powerful tool for problem-solving, for the cultivation of a sense of honor and integrity, and for building a sense of resilience and perseverance despite any odds.  Games also provide for the building of relationships, as brief as

Andrew Schley


Coach Andrew grew up competing in Wisconsin. Starting to coach in 2011 leading teams to multiple state championship teams at the Elementary and Middle school level. Also, has coached multiple individual Wisconsin high school champions and expert level players. Aside from the scholastic level has gone onto create two different college programs and is apart of the US College Chess Committee. Outside of chess, coach Andrew has a degree in elementary education, enjoys sports such as football, basketball, and rugby.
