Volunteer Opportunities - BAC
This Page will deal specifically with Scholastic Volunteer-Work, Ages 13 to 17. Adults may inquire about Volunteer opportunities at Tournament Events-only (which may generate lower fees for their children to partake in various activities!) by contacting ask@bayareachess.com.
As a leading non-profit organization in the industry, Bay Area Chess has always been a community-oriented beacon for teens (particularly alums) to acquire volunteer hours in the field of scholastic Chess. Our volunteers help keep the programs and events running, whether out front or behind-the-scenes, while also giving kids a chance to fulfill any school mandated volunteer hours. Or, perhaps you just want to give back or stay occupied in a healthy and productive way! A special thanks to BAC's volunteer helpers, past and present. You are appreciated!
Some all-stars:

Volunteer Work comes in three different options:
- Weekly Chess Clubs
We host Beginner and Intermediate classes throughout the year at drop-in club locations (see them). Most of the time, our staffing is more than adequate (we keep a relatively strong ratio) though some locations benefit from an extra helper from time to time. We are currently accepting volunteers at either our Palo Alto or San Jose locations (by appointment ONLY), for select weekends. Duties may include working with outlier student levels (engaging the top player if we have a mis-match, or teaching moves to newest players) or a combination of organizational tasks to assist the coaches with setup, cleanup, or to help facilitate the class activity. San Jose Club is hosted in our storage office, so there may be tasks there such as unboxing awards, sorting inventory, or replating trophies.
- Weekday Camps
We host seasonal Chess Camps in various cities, particularly over the summer. Camp volunteer slots come in 4-hour blocks, up to 5 days a week:
- Mornings : 9am-1pm
- Afternoons : 1pm to 5pm
- Middle : ~10:30am to 2:30pm
You may browse the Camp Menu to see what cities and dates that we host camps. Palo Alto, in particular, is most helpful to have volunteers join us, as the kids leave campus to have lunch and breaks at the nearby Park. Duties are often similar to the Clubs above, though with an added responsibility of helping the coaches manage student lines and headcounts. We prefer that CAMP volunteers start at age 14 instead of 13. Sometimes, a higher rated player will JOIN us for a Master Camp as a student and volunteer for the other half of the day, at the regular Camp.
- Major Tournament Events
Aside from the Summer months, BAC generally organizes a State or National Tournament Event monthly. See them. These large-scale events require an immense amount of preparation and maintenance to execute. While we rarely have volunteers work as floor-TD's or Scorers, such help is sometimes requested. Generally, the tasks are a combination of setting up awards, moving objects in or out of the venue, basic crowd control, door or room monitoring, taping-up lists, pairings or signage, resetting boards and pieces and cleaning up spaces between rounds.
Tournament Slots can be 2 to 8 hours each and most often in San Jose / Milpitas / Santa Clara:
• Friday nights, before the weekend event, usually 6-8pm
• Saturdays, anywhere between 7:30am to 5:30pm
• Sundays, anywhere between 8am to 6pm.
*These shifts may change based on the size and need for individual events - always have your slot approved before expecting available hours to match above.
Volunteer Compliance Statement
Volunteers play a vital role in supporting our company’s mission, and we deeply value their time, skills, and dedication. To ensure a safe, respectful, and productive environment for everyone, all volunteers are expected to follow our established rules, policies, and guidelines at all times. These standards are in place to protect both our team and the communities we serve, while maintaining the integrity and professionalism of our work. By adhering to these rules, volunteers help us operate smoothly, uphold our values, and deliver the highest quality of service.
Volunteers MAY NOT wear Inappropriate clothing or engage in inappropriate (or controversial, to a degree) conversations with students. This includes profanity, political or religious subject matter, or anything deemed too mature for the age-group that we are serving. While common sense should generally be able to sort out what is and is not allowed, always refer to the on-site coach or supervisor if unsure.
Physical contact is unnecessary and is avoided. Violence is outright banned.
Volunteers should limit their phone-time when assisting, as it gives the impression of overall disinterest and can make you unapproachable or reduce your engagement level. Some activities will have natural downtime, so it is not banned altogether, though we (and others) will notice if it becomes a dominating habit.
Long hours may include a break or lunch period. As you are working with BAC students, in an environment where you are likely touching communal BAC materials, we insist on volunteers following the protocol of No Nuts or Food-Sharing to help prevent contamination for those that may be allergic. Routine sanitization is also requested. Similarly, if you're sick, please stay home.
There is no situation where a Volunteer needs to be alone with a single student or player behind a closed door. In cases where this might temporarily arise, as innocent as it will seem, we still cannot allow it.
How to Request a Slot
Bay Area Chess will be creating a user-friendly portal to better track hours as we lead into late 2026.
For now, you may contact us at enrich@bayareachess.com with the following information:
1) Volunteer Name, Age and a brief Bio
2) Preferred Category (of the three above)
3) Times available/preferred, based on the hours and expectations mentioned.
4) Written confirmation that you read and understand the Compliance Statement.
Expect a reply. Ping us in 3 days if you don't receive one!
This will morph into a google-form eventually, so stay tuned for this to get even easier!

Did you know that Bay Area Chess is an affiliate of the Presidential Volunteer Service Award program?! This leads to extra honors (based on age and # of hours) that can earn certificates and even special medals from the US Government!
Note: BAC is not accepting NEW PVSA hours in 2026 (though prior volunteers may continue to accumulate PVSA hours). We will reopen this service to new members starting 1/1/27.
